Main collection
- The library focuses on documents in the fields of educational science and social science related to education and published or in connection with Hungary. The NELM has a selected collection of documents published in foreign countries.
- The collection included also psychological and sociological documents reference books, and fiction books recommended in public education.
- Periodicals' collection consists of Hungarian educational journals; almanachs; journals for children and youth; selected foreign educational journals; selected cultural, literary and sociological journals; newspapers and educational newsletters.

Special collections of:
- schoolbooks, textbooks, manuals for elementary and secondary education in an compulsory school objects. Schoolbooks of the Hungarian minority in other countries and foreign textbooks.
- children's literature included both fiction and non-fiction materials. A complete document collection of the Hungarian and a selected ones of the foreign publishing.
- school reports and yearbooks of primary and secondary schools of Hungary. Yearbooks of the foreign language schools in Hungary and the Hungarian schools in foreign states.
